About the WaterLink

The WaterLink is an educational programme about "Water" and has been initiated by the Water Services Unit of the Christchurch City Council. The programme involves a study about water in Canterbury around the themes of: Students are encouraged, from the information in these areas to formulate their own ideas around issues that affect water as a sustainable managed resource in Canterbury. Water as a subject of study is very topical at present with the recent restrictions that were imposed. Present day students are those who will be responsible in the future for maintaining its wise use.

The World Wide Web is being used to present information in an attractive format for students to learn about water in these areas. Teacher information is also presented by way of curriculum objectives, suggestions of sites to visit, suggestions for activities with students, and student work sheets linking to the information on the web. Interactive modules will present students the opportunities to formulate their ideas on issues and ecological concepts. The web site has been developed by a professional web developer and graphic artists.

Opportunities are available for students and teachers to e-mail the Water Services Unit from the web site, using an enquiry form and receive replies to questions they may have.

An audioconferencing programme is available for schools to log into. Schools with audioconferencing equipment are encouraged to participate in this programme. Over the four conferences during the year, the topics to be covered are: Water distribution and quality, the management of wetlands and waterways within the city, wildlife values, and Tangata Whenua issues. This will be a great opportunity for students to direct their questions to people who are knowledgeable in their field and to expand on the information found on the web.

On 21-22 October, there will be a competition organised for students in class years 6 to 10 (standard 4 to form 4) to display some of the work they have done using the media of a poster, or a video, or a computer multimedia programme. Using these media for follow-up work in the classroom, during this year, to any work being done on our water resource or sustainable management of water would be a great way to getting started towards the competition. Teachers who are intending to enter their students in the competition are asked to register their interest through the on-line web site form. This will help us with the organisation of the display, which will be held at the Christchurch Convention Centre over the two day period.
