An example of how this web site can be used
A teacher of year 6 students in a Christchurch School - Craig McGregor
My class is a year 6 class of 30 students. In the class there is one computer that is not on line. In the school library, there is one on-line computer. To bring this web site learning experience to my class will present challenges in organising time for the students to get time to go to the school library to work through the interactive activities.
My class would be divided into 7 groups of 4 to 5 students each, assigned to work stations that have been prepared and set up.
- One of these stations would be the computer in the library. I would have to make sure that the school timetabling will allow me to use this computer at the time that I need it.
- Poetry writing activities work cards around the theme of water. Preteaching of this may involve use of a standardised form such as haiku.
- A math activity card on measuring how much water came out of a tap in one minute, and using this to calculate how much water is used in watering the garden over a specific period of time.
- Art materials so that students could make a start on a poster for the WaterLink competition.
- The computer in the classroom has "Power Point" on it. A group of students will use this to make a presentation on an aspect of water that interests them. This would be the basis of the entry for the computer multimedia section of the competition.
- The eel life cycle colouring frieze supplied by the Department of Conservation: a group reading, then colouring activity.
- The students as a group discussing and recording their thoughts on a sheet with questions on water conservation.
Each station would last for approximately 45 minutes, with groups cycling through the work stations over successive days. Times would then be allocated for students to complete work, either individually, or in groups, and for class follow-up discussion on the work completed, through the Internet interactive activities.
